When Suicide Knocks, Show It Respect [Doing Justice to Robin Williams’ Memory]

Referencing the Emmy’s Tribute:

For those who have never felt as if life was so much pain that suicide seemed to be the only logical alternative, or that ending their life was the kindest thing they could do for friends and relatives, please don’t over simplify by:

  • Saying only cowards kill themselves

And for those who have spent too much of their adult lives contemplating suicide, please don’t:

  • Use Robin Williams’ death as an excuse for your own

I spoke with a suicidal friend recently who said that life was obviously meaningless because even Robin Williams thought so. I asked my friend if he had struggled with addiction and debilitating disease. When he answered, “No,” I encouraged him to find an alternative role model, perhaps someone who had turned hell around and made a difference.
