Top Seven Reasons People Don’t Want to Talk to Us

  1. We aren’t listening to them
  2. We give our opinion without an invitation
  3. There are unresolved issues that block the exchange of new information
  4. We always make it about us
  5. They don’t trust us
  6. They already know what we’re going to say or talk about
  7. We are not willing to learn

listening

Beside the obvious and aggressive communication stoppers (like blaming, shaming, judging, criticizing, and threatening), the subtle, “I-am-only-trying-to-help” barriers begin with…

  • interrupting
  • defending ourselves
  • pushing our own agenda
  • “But…”

When I hear myself complaining about a lack of communication from someone, I should first do myself a big favor and dismantle the barriers that I have so diligently constructed.

  1. Great reminders, Pam! I think number 1 nails it 90% of the time. We are often thinking about what we are going to say, rather than listening to what is being said. Stop talking and start listening. (Seek first to understand)
