Rescued by Words

Sometimes someone says something to me at just the right time, something that saves me from wilting away into a pile of self-pity, or stumbling headlong into a sucking black hole of depression.

Sometimes, the important words have come from books. The Hunchback of Notre Dame,  A Tale of Two Cities, Roots, Pillars of the Earth, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Kite Runner, and A Thousand Splendid Suns (to name only a few) saved me by showing me the smallness of my own suffering compared to that of centuries, and worlds, of sufferers.

Then other books infused me with the hope and courage to be my own hero.
