No One Asked You

Sometimes you can’t tell anyone anything or answer a simple question without being told what to do about it. You mention you have some sort of pain and immediately, “your sure solution” pops out of someone’s mouth, case closed, even before they’ve heard two sentences of your story!

I speak from experience. I am a guilty party to this type of annoying behavior, but am learning to keep my mouth shut and listen.

If someone wants my opinion, they’ll ask. Otherwise I can assume I’m only being asked to care.

By doing just that, I avoid:

  • Pontificating about something they’ve already tried
  • Boring people with “what happened to me”
  • Being insensitive
  • Giving stupid advice
  • Taxing the patience of family, friends, and peers

Friends and Peers Rules

Be refreshing and rare.

Just care.

  1. You ask advice: ah, what a very human and very dangerous thing to do! For to give advice to a man who asks what to do with his life implies something very close to egomania. To presume to point a man to the right and ultimate goal — to point with a trembling finger in the RIGHT direction is something only a fool would take upon himself.
