A Real Toast to You

My husband always reminds me that a toast doesn’t count unless you look into the eyes of the person you are toasting. Technically, his advice also applies to “Bless You,” “Gesundheit,” or “How Are You?”

In fact, if you should ever want to become a better person overnight, here is the quickest route I have found: look deep into the eyes of everyone you encounter and think about their particular beauty, while saying to yourself, “Is there anything I can do for you?” Finding real time for others has often been my remedy for self-centeredness, social anxiety, misdirected ambition, fear, confusion, and selfishness.

  1. I agree that eye contact is so important, in every situation.
