Independence is a lovely thing, worth fighting for and worth celebrating, for sure. Yet, over the years, we celebrators might have done better to remember:
- Our Independence Day celebrations were a slap in the face of slaves for decades.
- During WWII, African Americans who fought for the dignity and deliverance of oppressed Jews didn’t appreciate the discrimination and oppression they were dealt in the “land of the free.”
- U.S. women couldn’t really cash in on the freedom thing. No vote until 1920. No property ownership (if they were married) until the mid 19th century.
- Many children, immigrants, minorities, and ethnicities still struggle for basic freedoms today.
