After the newness wears off…of the new semester, the new job, the new relationship, or the new project…then we are left with the disillusionment, the “what do I do now?” or something worse. Grades go down, promises get broken, fights get started, and commitments get abandoned.
This well-worn path involves despairing, moaning and groaning about how unfair life is to us, looking for the next best thing, and plenty of blame, denial, and/or self-deception.
The only way I have found to deal productively with the dark side of new (without drugs or alcohol) is to 1) anticipate it, 2) plan for it, and 3) annihilate it with tenacity.
This much is sure about life. We will need all of it.
