Labor Day Dissected and Revisited

(Starting a blog about Labor Day…I decided that my message from last year still held a message for me.) Happy Labor Day!

When patting ourselves on the back for what we have accomplished “all by ourselves,” it is a great exercise to look down and see who has held us up to see the parade. Besides the obvious Life-Giver, relatives, lovers, and caregivers, we all stand precariously upon the shoulders of…

builders, farmers, engineers, sanitation workers, inventors, miners, truckers, baggage handlers, carpenters, chemists, warehousemen, mathematicians, loggers, philosophers, artists, groundskeepers, teachers, dishwashers, architects, cooks, grocers, scientists, welders, doctors, administrators, technicians, auditors, and janitors, drivers, firemen, and policemen, etc., etc.

“We sometimes think we want to disappear, but all we really want to be found.”

The message of this photo carries a revelation about the fun of dressing up on Halloween. As a kid, I looked forward to being noticed and talked to by adults who normally ignored me.

Last night I dreamed that I was with a large group of adults who were walking around zombie-like, doing very strange things. I was confused about what was going on until overhearing the organizer say, “When someone eventually shows enough interest to ask what you are doing, you may have a difficult time answering. You have been doing this for so long that you may have forgotten why.”

This Halloween, see more than costumes. We all want to be found.

Happy 4th But I Hate Your Guts

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were bitter political rivals who reconciled in their later years (thanks to the efforts of a friend who saw the benefit of their friendship to each other and to the country).

Their friendship became a remarkable collaboration and on July 4th, 1826,  on the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the two men both died, within hours of each other. Unaware that his friend had died hours earlier, Adams’ last spoken words were “Jefferson still survives.”

I love this story because of its reminder that true independence comes when we release resentment, judgement and hatred; when we allow all to live and thrive in our world.

I found there was room in the world for everyone. – John Adams

Avoid the Letdown

I hate to admit this, but when I was a kid and a teenager (okay, and an immature adult too), after presents were opened, I got depressed. It was like, “Now what?” I was disappointed with some of the gifts I received and wanted more to open. All my anticipation had quickly turned into boredom.

I hope you never had this problem.

But, if you have, there is only one cure that has worked for me: basing my joy on more meaningful things in the first place.

A very beautiful…and meaningful day to you today.

Freedom!

We all want it.

Freedom makes life worth living.

Those who have been denied basic freedoms attest to that.

But, there are also those who found freedom in spite of their circumstances.

They call to us today, raising the flag of freedom and bellowing a song of hope.

Viktor-Frankl-quote

And, there are those of us who have always been free who live as if we are not.

Celebrate your freedom today by changing your mind.

Two Minute Tune-up 7.5.11 Looking Back on the Holiday

Frederick Douglas, the slave who became a great public speaker for the cause of liberation, often commented on the way slaves felt while observing Americans celebrate their independence. The holiday seemed cruel and hypocritical to those who had no independence.

It is important for us to remember that.

The two calls to action for me are: 1) Fight for freedom all over the world, wherever I have the power to do so, and 2) Don’t be a freakin’ hypocrite. Respect ALL people and their need for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Happy 5th of July!
